Mechatronics in Wood Engineering (dual)

All aspects of the industrial utilisation of wood and wood-based products are showing a clear trend towards greater flexibility in production technologies. With the aim of increasing resource efficiency, the increasing integration of electronic and mechanical processes in production and processing technologies gives rise to new occupational profiles in the timber industry. Oriented toward these objectives, this study programme offers a modern engineering programme, incorporating two practical phases at a partner company and a bachelor thesis into a standard period of study of seven semesters.

Programme structure

In addition to foundations in engineering and mechatronics, the modular program structure initially looks at the basic properties of lignocellulosic raw materials. Microscopic and macroscopic measurement methods play a major role in the evaluation of material-specific properties of the natural resource wood. Building on the insights gained through structural analysis, it is possible to describe and classify the raw material and deduce product-specific properties. Furthermore, students gain qualifications in sub-disciplines of wood engineering. The programme also features modules in measuring, control and regulation technologies as well as joining technologies. The range of courses is rounded off with a diverse range of elective modules offered by the Faculty of Wood Engineering, enabling students to specialise.

Career opportunities

The skills to combine electronic and mechanical processes in production engineering and process engineering, specifically in the processing and reprocessing or modification of wood or renewable raw materials with their diverse uses or use potentials, gives students the ideal preparation for the later careers. As industrial wood and wood-based product usage grows in significance as a branch, students have excellent career prospects and many opportunities to work their way up. Moreover, the programme aims to integrate sustainability into industry branches where to date it has not been a priority.
