(Reacredited degree programme, offered until the winter semester 2020/21 under the name “Regional Development and Nature Conservation”)
The Master’s programme ” Sustainable Regional Development: Education-Management-Nature Conservation ” is ideal for graduates of ecologically oriented Bachelor’s programmes looking to deepen their knowledge. It offers three specialisation pathways: a) the specialisation “Environmental Education / Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)”, b) the specialisation “Biodiversity Management in the Cultural Landscape” and c) “Individual Profilling”.
Programme structure
The programme combines regional development and nature conservation through excursions, hands-on training and practical methods. Students acquire a wide range of subject-based and methodological skills and proficiencies, preparing them for their future career and encouraging personal development.
Interdisciplinary learning, the focus on sustainable development and collaboration with external cooperation partners are the hallmarks of this programme. In the six-month project completed in the third semester, students work in teams to apply their theoretical knowledge through the conceptualisation and implementation of interesting projects in collaboration with regional players.

Career opportunities
The programme covers environmental project design and the acquisition of knowledge on nature conservation topics, and gives students the necessary skills for practical and sustainable regional development. After completing the programme, students are ideally prepared to launch their careers in environmental or nature conservation associations, specialist authorities, or institutes and planning offices.

Ilona Hadasch
“My name is Ilona Hadasch, I have finished my doctoral thesis (which will be published as a book in the summer) and I now work as a political advisor in the eighth district of Vienna, in the attractive area of Josefstadt. After a Bachelor’s degree in Urbanism (Bauhaus-Universität Weimar) and a Master’s in European Spatial Planning and Regional Development (Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Karlskrona/Schweden), I joined the Regional Development and Nature Conservation programme at the HNEE in 2013 and graduated in 2015.
From the very first day, I appreciated the pleasant and open relationship between the teaching staff and students. Receiving so much input from internal and external lecturers was one of the highlights for me, and I was fortunate to experience freedom and feel inspired in my student jobs in the Start-Up Centre and with Prof. Dr. Jürgen Peters.
My current job is the third position I have held since finishing studying. I started out in 2016 as a city planner in a private planning office. I happened to hear about this job from another city planner in an office where I wanted to submit an initiative application. Unfortunately, he couldn’t take anyone on at that time but informed me that a contact had an opening. What a happy coincidence! My city planner position was for 20 hours per week and I used this to finance my hobby – my doctoral thesis. In the summer of 2019, I applied for a position in Vienna and began as an administrative intern at the City of Vienna. Before I had finished my administrative internship, I had already been offered a position as political advisor.
As a political advisor, my remit is extensive. It comprises communication and public relations work in the district administration, e.g. organising events, writing press releases, managing social media channels, as well as the culture and environment in the district, such as supervising the Cultural Commission and the Environment Committee and contacting the relevant specialised services from the City of Vienna.
In this job, there is no such thing as a typical day! But writing texts and meeting people make up a large proportion of it.
I would like to connect even more things. My time at the HNEE showed me once again that it is important to find out what you’re really passionate about. I am certain that everyone should concentrate on this so that they know where they want to go in their (working) life. This was what motivated me to write my doctoral dissertation alongside my first job without earning a single cent for the research work. I wanted to take the time to really get to grips with the subject area and explore my passion.
I knew what passion for a topic looked like, as I had experienced it on a daily basis from the teaching staff at the HNEE who I knew.
It is a sort of mindset which has stayed with me, at least since my studies in Eberswalde. I try to cultivate this mindset not only in my work, but also in my free time and in life in general.
And I can strongly recommend starting your career with an administrative internship!
