Learn to bring humans and nature together on a global scale through model regions! The international Master’s programme Biosphere Reserves Management (M.Sc.) equips students with the skills to effectively manage, support and develop biosphere reserves.
Programme structure
Biosphere Reserves Institute
The study programme is closely associated with the Biosphere Reserves Institute (BRI) at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. BRI is a scientific institute at the university with a thematic focus on the implementation of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere programme and its designated model areas, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. Through the institute, the HNEE aims to bring together the thematic excellence of the faculties involved. Want to find out more about the BRI?

Overview of the programme structure
Students learn to develop sustainability strategies using participatory and cooperative approaches. They acquire knowledge concerning ecosystems and different land use concepts. In addition, students discover how biodiversity protection can be improved and how climate change mitigation and the resultant uncertainty can be avoided. Cultural and socioeconomic challenges as well as opportunities are identified and reflected.
This Master’s programme teaches competences in the field of “Ecological and social systems”. This enables students to understand the complexity and dynamics of nature-human relationships. To this end, academic, socioeconomic and ethical aspects of sustainable land use are conveyed.
Another field of competence focuses on the “Governance and management of biosphere reserves”. The principles and instruments of governance and adaptive management play a crucial role in the effective development of biosphere reserves and the successful management of transformation processes. Project management, monitoring and evaluation as well as education for sustainable development are central aspects of this field of competence.
The research semester and Master’s thesis offer students the opportunity to practically apply their newly acquired knowledge.

Career opportunities
It is essential that students master the guiding principle of biosphere reserves, namely: cooperation, communication and learning. The Master’s programme equips its graduates with the skills to act with confidence in intercultural contexts and conflict situations. Approaches for effective communication and personal development therefore make up an integral part of the programme.
BRM graduates will be qualified to enter biosphere reserve administration around the world or work in international organisations, state authorities responsible for biosphere reserves, national and international projects, NGOs or in responsible areas of the private sector.
