The Master’s programme »Forestry System Transformation« (FST) is oriented toward a modern forest ecosystem management adapted to the social and ecological challenges of the future. It aims to use innovative political and economic instruments, strategies and evaluation methods which expand and sustainably promote the range of forest ecosystem services.
Programme structure
Students develop an understanding for the impacts of changing conditions and changing utilisation of forest resources on forest ecosystems, ecosystem services (ESS) and the related value-added chains. Through the development of solution paths for dealing with usage conflicts in forest management practice, students acquire the skills to recognise different trends and to initiate, critically reflect on, supervise and actively shape processes of change. The opportunities and limitations of the market, state and network-based solution strategies of forest and environment governance are explored in greater detail.

Placing a strong emphasis on a socioeconomic and innovation-systemic perspective, ecosystem functions and services such as biodiversity conservation and climate protection, avalanche protection, water and air pollution control as well as the aesthetic aspects and health benefits of forests are determined and analysed. This provides the basis for their integration into political and economic decision-making processes, included at a company level and incorporation into international political agenda-setting. Strategies for promoting innovation – from new wood products to political transformation processes – are always in the spotlight as students explore academic discourse, political debates, new market systems and premises culminating their own practical transformation project.
