Wood is one of the most sustainably produced raw materials. In addition to its traditional use as a material in load-bearing and cladding applications, wood can also be utilised thermally, materially and chemically. These diverse utilisation options have greatly increased the demand for this raw material in recent years against the background of creating sustainable products. This change in utilisation paths and the demand for high raw material efficiency has technological consequences that are changing the tasks of engineers in this field. This requires competent, highly qualified specialists. After successfully completing a Bachelor’s degree in timber engineering with a specialisation in “Structural Engineering” or “Wood Technology”, there are a wide range of career prospects in this up-and-coming and modern industry. In addition to the qualification for a subsequent Master’s programme, the Bachelor’s degree enables direct career entry into engineering activities. A good thesis often leads to the first job offer.
Programme structure
The “Wood Engineering” degree programme teaches all the production and process engineering content of a classical engineering science, including the structural application of wood and other renewable raw materials. This includes the material fundamentals such as wood biology, wood chemistry and wood physics as well as the processing of wood, the production of wood-based materials and their processing including the constructive use of wood in the building industry and the fundamentals of building physics. The degree programme includes a practical semester, many internships and excursions as well as an introduction to the classic and industrial machines used in woodworking and wood processing. You decide on your specialisation by choosing one of the two specialisations on offer. While the “Wood Technology” specialisation provides in-depth knowledge of woodworking and wood processing with a focus on wood materials and production technology, the “Building Construction” specialisation teaches you advanced skills in the field of sustainable construction and timber construction. Compulsory elective modules allow you to include further wood and sustainability-related topics in your degree programme according to your interests
Career opportunities
The broad-based degree programme enables further professional development in related sectors. The degree programme qualifies you to work as an engineer in the wood industry. If you specialise in “Wood Technology”, you will primarily be employed in the entire manufacturing and production chain in sawmills and veneer mills, in the wood-based materials industry, in series furniture production, in interior design and in timber construction production. After graduating with a specialisation in “Building Construction”, you can work as a specialist planner for sustainable construction, timber construction, fire protection, building physics, wood preservation and building pollutants. Timber construction is seen as an important sector for the future, which has developed considerably in recent years and will continue to do so in the future. Methods of environmentally friendly construction are increasingly in demand on the market. Companies in the sector specialising in timber construction and timber technology will also develop in this direction. As the use of wood and wood-based materials in the construction industry also requires a very high level of material expertise, this is the interface to the construction industry. In addition, there are also prospects in management and corporate management, including companies run by craftsmen. If you are interested in research and development activities, we recommend a subsequent Master’s programme, such as the Master’s in Wood Engineering at the HNE.
