Tourism has the potential to sustainably promote regions, generate income and open up new adventures and experiences for travellers. However, it also consumes resources, harms the environment and can lead to cultural exploitation and social inequalities. This is where the Master’s programme »Sustainable Tourism Management« comes in. Open to graduates with Bachelor’s degrees in fields relating to tourism, economics or geography, students learn how tourism has to be planned and organised if it is to achieve a balance between economics, ecology and social issues.
Programme structure
The programme is one of the few tourism programmes in Germany to consistently focus on sustainability in its curriculum. In addition to foundations in sustainable development, alternative theories of economics, regional management and corporate social responsibility in tourism, students also learn methods for sustainable destination management, social entrepreneurship and responsible marketing methods. The programme also shines the spotlight on digitalisation (e-tourism).
The programme is characterised by its emphasis on practical application. The professors and teaching staff are extremely well connected in the world of sustainable tourism – both in Germany and abroad. Project work therefore constitutes a central part of the programme. This offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience and make contacts in the tourism industry.
In this video (in German), students describe their experiences in the Master’s programme, what motivated them to study Sustainable Tourism Management and what is so special about the programme at the HNEE.
